Act #85- Polar Opposites (Cheryll)

I went to Stop & Shop on Saturday of July 4th holiday weekend.  It was an absolute zoo!  I was headed for the Express Lane and saw a gentleman racing back and forth between lanes trying to figure out which was shorter.  He committed to one as I was getting in line at the other.  He made a split second decision to jump back to my lane not realizing I was right next to him.  He was obviously frantic and in a hurry, so I insisted he go ahead of me.  We conversed while waiting our turns.  He had a house full of guests back at home and was on a last minute mission for his wife.  Who knows, I may have saved their marriage!!!

When it was my turn to check out, another customer behind me had put a pack of gum on the conveyor.  The cashier inadvertently rung it up with my order.  The burly, tattooed "gentleman" said ,"Hey that's mine not hers".  The poor girl was flustered and said "I have to get a manager for an override".  He was not happy, but I said cheerfully, "No need, I'll pay for it"!  He looked at me like I had six heads, scowled at me and the cashier then said, "No".  I was tempted to put the gum in my bag and leave, but instead I signed my credit card receipt, slid the gum back on the conveyor, smiled and said, "Pay it forward.  Happy 4th" and I left!  I admit I was muttering in my head all they way out to the car, but found solace in the stupefied look on his face!  Kill 'em with kindness!
